How much does weed cost in Maryland?

Maryland adds a 12% sales tax to adult-use cannabis, so a $50 eighth comes to $56. Registered medical patients pay no cannabis tax. Past that, prices and discounts are up to each shop, and they vary a lot.

The 12% cannabis tax

Maryland's cannabis sales tax went from 9% to 12% on July 1, 2025. It applies to every adult-use purchase at a licensed dispensary.

On a $50 eighth, 12% is $6, so you pay $56. A $30 purchase comes to $33.60, and $100 comes to $112. Check whether the menu price already includes tax before you do the math.

Registered patients pay no cannabis tax

If you buy as a registered medical patient, the 12% tax does not apply. That $50 eighth costs $50. The same goes for a registered caregiver buying for a patient.

If you are the patient, say so before they ring you up, and have your patient ID number and a photo ID ready.

What weed actually costs

State sales data works out to roughly $8 a gram on average. That's a blended figure across every shop and strain. You won't see it on a shelf.

On the menu, prices swing by shop, brand and batch. These are typical ranges at many shops, before tax:

  • Eighth (3.5 g) of flower: about $25 to $60
  • Half-gram pre-roll: about $7 to $14
  • One-gram pre-roll: about $10 to $22
  • Half-gram vape cartridge: about $35 to $80

First-time, veteran, senior and industry discounts

Many Maryland dispensaries run their own discounts: money off a first visit, an everyday discount for veterans or seniors, or one for people who work in cannabis. None of it comes from state law. Each shop decides whether to offer one, who qualifies and how much it's worth.

Terms differ. One shop's first-time deal covers the whole order, another's only covers certain products. Whether two discounts stack, or a discount stacks with a sale price, is the shop's call too.

Some shop pages on this site list the standing discounts the shop publishes, in the shop’s own words.

How to ask

Ask at the counter: "Do you have a first-time discount?" or "Do you do a veteran discount?" and "Does it stack with anything?"

Bring whatever proves you qualify, such as a veteran ID.

Budgeting a first visit

For a first visit, one pre-roll or a small pack of edibles keeps the spend low. Add 12% for tax and, if you pay at the shop ATM, its fee.

Every shop in our directory of licensed Maryland dispensaries comes from the state’s own license list, with hours and payment details where the shop publishes them.
